Dehydration

The Hanging Girl

Dehydration is the bodily and psychological crisis that shapes Shirley’s captivity. With only a small amount of water left in the toilet, she recognizes that the deprivation is likely to kill her; paradoxically, as hope fails, her thoughts become more lucid and her remaining effort shifts toward making Pirjo answer for what has happened.

Conditions and Expected Course

By Friday, May 16, 2014, Shirley has endured a nightmare lasting barely a week. She understands that survival accounts about people living for weeks without food or for a long time on very little water do not describe her circumstances. She expects the process to be short-lived and knows she is going to die, though this prospect no longer frightens her. The small handful of water remaining in the toilet makes the scarcity concrete: there is almost nothing left to conserve, and no dependable source of relief appears in her immediate situation.

Physical Decline and Unexpected Clarity

The deprivation is marked by extreme dryness in Shirley’s mouth, exhaustion, and the unpleasant smell of feces and her own body. Since her fateful trip to the toilet in the middle of the night, she has no longer felt the need to relieve herself. Her body is weak and tired, but her mind, unexpectedly, becomes more alert than it has been for years. She experiences what feels almost like euphoria over the last day and speculates that her organs may no longer have to work so hard at digestion, while acknowledging that she does not understand the other possible causes. The account presents this mental improvement alongside, not instead of, the bodily deterioration.

The Loss of Hope and the Last Water

The loss of water becomes a turning point because it extinguishes the hope Shirley had relied on throughout her life. She looks back on hopes for recognition from her parents, weight loss, a partner or good friend, and meaningful work, seeing how one had repeatedly been replaced by another without resolving the larger absence. Now even the final hope of getting through the immediate ordeal has gone. When she later pauses and drinks the last of the water in the toilet, the act marks the exhaustion of what little supply remained. Facing death with a clearer head, she resolves not to go quietly and to ensure that blame points toward Pirjo.
